The theme for the Swedish RIDEF will be:

Communication is about the transportation of ideas and substance.

Communication has always played an important part in Freinet Education.

Celestin Freinet has questioned the traditional, mechanical, repressive teaching and he proposed a pedagogy that considered the differents realities of his pupils. He favored a collective and cooperative pedagogy.

According to Freinet, the school was filled with political meanings, with transformation and necessary changes, far from scholasticism and capitalism, wanting to get away from the indoctrination that pushes us to alienated work.

We live in a time that is immersed in a neoliberal discourse that leads to educational reforms worldwide, under the conditions of international credit agencies, thus constituting education as a tool for alienation of work and life.

When educators became aware of this and work for the formation of free and autonomous subjects, we become militant pedagogues, working against what seems inevitable.

Communication, in the Freinet Pedagogy,  is fundamental for these changes and processes. It is not possible to conceive real emancipation without dialogue, without the other, without the cooperation, and without our participation in processes and responsability in taking personal and collectives decisions.

Communication crosses transversally the Pedagogy Freinet, that it is a pedagogy of the communication, the work  and the free expression.

This is how it enables children to express themselves freely, through the class assembly, of collective spaces in which to share life, concerns, interests… Through the school newspaper, the publication of free texts, between many other techniques that enabled the child to express himself through multiple forms of expression.

His class started to produce newspapers with texts written by his students and books made by their own hands. The students wrote about everyday life, about what happened in the village, what their mothers and fathers did…  For that, they used an easy to use printing press. That implied the cooperative work and put into practice one of the main values in Freinet Pedagogy that is our theme in this meeting  2018: the communication .

We can imagine what Freinet and his colleagues would have done with internet and the current possibilities of communication technology.

This is something that you can see nowadays in Freinet classes all over the world.


“Give a voice to the children” is, without doubt, a sign of identity of this pedagogy.

  • The communication and cooperation between teachers
  • The communication between pupils in the class
  • The communication between classes
  • The communication between independent states and continents (to be able to promote the  solidarity spirit and understanding for our differences and inequalities).

The different ways that each of us think and make Freinet pedagogy is amazing!!
We discuss, we learn from each other, we share our different contexts and experiences, we get to understand complex realities…
This is amazing inside your own school, but even more amazing with collegues from other schools, or even better: in the international movement you meet collegues from other countries.
Inside the movement Freinet, is very important to visit each other in the class room and to discuss matters about teaching, methods, didactics, about Freinet principals values and techniques.
We are promoting a culture of work together.
Freinet used to ask to their collegues how were they doing the tecniques?
What problemas did they resolve in each practice?
And they were building this pedagogy together, in a cooperative way,  discussing, writing the theory as from their practice.
Maybe your problems are our problems too… but how can you resolve it? How can FP resolve it? We have to share our experiences, discuss, reflex and think again and do.

Students communicate and cooperate together.

Here the class council is the center of this cooperation and communication.
There are several possibilities where the kids can learn about communicating like the morning circles or the Presentation rounds and so one.
But the main talking about class life and culture, about working together and learning from each other happens in the class council.
Freinet teachers seek to develop pedagogical practices anchored in social reality, to work in favor of a real emancipation of children.
We want a school where every child can express themselves, take responsability, cooperate, experiment and open up to the world.

The communication between different classes.

In Freinet Pedagogy the class correspondancy is very important and motivates the children to write about their topics, about their lives, about their work in school and then motivates them as well to read about another class and what they are doing, how do they live,  and thinking and dreaming of…

This exchange of letters, drawings, of handycrafts and other precious items can be done between different countries and cultures, but also between schools nearby, maybe between and town school and a countryside school. Being closer enables you to visit each other in the class room or for a field trip or a swim …

Today’s technology offers incredible opportunities for exchanges between us and by many different ways. We will be using different tools facilitate communication between participants at the 32nd RIDEF.

It is our great hope that our overriding COMMUNICATION theme will provide us with new and highly applicable knowledge for the International Freinet Movement while at the same time giving a bit of a boost to a new generation of young and progressive teachers.
